We are by which we are moved in return is a collaboration with artist Jay White and composer Chris Kelly that reflects both the roots of the company’s creative partnership in contact dance and their evolving interests in materiality and scenographic design.
We are by which we are moved in return is a dance created in confederacy with our shared past and divergent perspectives. It is an attempt to make present the long history of unspoken exchanges, asymmetrical desires and complex creative interdependency that is at the heart of MACHiNENOiSY. For us creation is reciprocal — an exchange of internal and external forces co-mingling to produce an effect in time, which — in return — produces another effect. In this way, We are by which we are moved in return is an intimate look at MACHiNENOiSY’s creative approach — an autobiography of their collaboration.
Future development of the duet is supported by Left of Main and The Dance Centre in 2018/19. We are by which we are moved in return will be presented by The Dance Centre in April 2019.
Co directed by Delia Brett and Daelik, MACHiNENOiSY endeavours to build a kinetic bridge to ideas and issues of contemporary relevance. The company seeks to collaborate with other artistic practices to transcend received ideas about the difference between dance, theatre and visual art. MACHiNENOiSY’s full evening productions include: Vancouver vs. Vancouver (2007), He was swimming the other way (2008), The Open Spaces Project (2009), plaything (2009), Law of Proximity (2012), BAMBOOZLED (2013), Time Machine (2015) and their production/process with Queer youth, PROX:IMITY REMIX (2015-17). The company has toured throughout Canada, the US and Europe.

“…dance that taps all your senses, with scene after scene a new world of warped imagination…. it’s a testament to the effectiveness of this show that it’s not a one-person achievement, but a true collaboration.”
