This story takes place a long time ago in a future that has not yet arrived. It begins with two beings in a mid-light world.
Mid-Light is a new, multi-disciplinary performance that combines choreography, text, music, and digital projection to build a restless world — a world always just on the brink of rupture. A piece performed by 4 dancers — 2 men and 2 women —, the work dissects the ephemeral nature of a singular emotional moment, revealing just how malleable memory can be. The moment is repeated; it plays over and over again, continuously dissolving into other configurations of itself.
Mid-Light is the third project commissioned by Theatre Replacement for their COLLIDER program, an artistic residency commissioning work from experimental artists, revolving around the PushOFF platform. This work-in-development is scheduled to premiere in 2021.
MAHAILA PATTERSON-O’BRIEN is an emerging choreographer in Vancouver, BC. Her works are collaborative efforts with new media artist and composer Remy Siu and centre around creating tangible tensions between choreography, projection, sound, and sometimes text. Using abstract formal movement that focuses on unison, repetition, and complex patterns, the other collaborative elements work to expose the emotional landscape of the performers. She is co-artistic director of the collective Farouche with Felicia Lau and Erika Mitsuhashi.
